This too shall Pass

‘This too shall pass’ is one of my favourite sayings, in a world beguiled by fakery it is an unbreakable, unsentimental TRUTH. All that we are, endure, love, know will as surely as the seasons change, fade and ultimately in time turn to dust.

Maybe, maybe not, nothing last forever and it is folly to believe anything we do will last beyond our life time? let alone hundreds or thousands of years from now.

As everything becomes more and more digitalised all we are seems now only too exist on screens and in the digital ether. We are told our data, our digital memories, hopes and dreams are back up and safe. Safe against what? Hard drive or server failure, power cuts, storms, earthquakes, wars, ordered deletion. Our 2021 cultural wonders unlike those of Neolithic civilisation could all be gone in a simple malicious keystroke. Improbable many would say, oh the naïveté of optimistic fools. It’s not being alarmist to state the bloody obvious even the megalith above (Lanyon Quoit, Cornwall) will one day be space dust waiting to be re-formed into who knows what.

‘This too shall pass’ should be a mantra we all utter everyday, if only to refocus our hearts and minds to the ephemeral nature and wonder of our very existence.

When Your Truth is not Welcome

Not all truth is welcome, more and more it seems people in power or show business who speak their truth are forced a few days later to apologise or even resign because their remarks have offended someone somewhere, this is very sad. It means that inner truth is not equal and that freedom of speech is not truly supported. This can only make for a world of candy coated liars who only say what they think you want to hear.

Because all inner truths are not considered equal we have a world where many can’t express their opinions in public, they must go under ground or keep their ideas locked up inside, this can be very dangerous and this is no doubt how ‘radical’ groups are formed. Also this is why many people commit suicide unable to live or speak their truth because they are deemed to far out or taboo . Once again how many men or women of history have fallen into the freaks category for their time only now to be deemed Great. So how many great minds do we loose every year simply because their truth is out of step with the times?

The world we have constructed is not built on truth it is built on complete fantasy, what we have done is create a schizophrenic world where what you say and how you act is purely moderated by who you are with. We are all actors in a play of total deception, wearing masks to hide who we are and what we truly believe, It is no wonder so many are lost in addiction.
So it seems Jack Nicholson was right society probably ‘can’t handle the truth’.

Lies, my art and when words run out.

It is my belief that words are highly overrated and in general the less said the better. Words have become shields to hide behind or should I say lie behind as most of what we say is either a known or unknown lie. Many words and phrases we use daily are totally pointless and a veil to hide the fact that we often couldn’t care less. For example the daily ‘how are you?’ to friends and colleagues we meet especially in western cultures is just a throw away line. It is not really a question that wants a real answer a simple acknowledgement is all that is require back something like ‘good’ ‘great’ or a ‘Not to bad ‘ will do nicely, the truth is not required as it would often take to long. Often that is the end of the conversation and both parties go on about their day. What has really happened here other than two parties playing their roles in one of life’s banal plays.

If we look harder into the words we use, we find that the above example is just the tip of an ice berg of lies. ‘love you’, ‘ I’ll ring you’, ‘stay in touch’ , ‘ you look great’, ‘you’ll be fine’ it goes on and on and on. Lies upon lies upon lies and all the time on some level our bodies yearn to tell the truth. To be really honest, but we know often that would be too painful or rude. Seldom would we want someone to speak the truth to us and so out of a misplaced politeness we all play the game. The need for Political correctness has in fact changed little in our minds but it has forced us simply to lie more and more.

So why do we do it? Why do we speak at all? That comment people sometimes get told ‘If you’ve nothing good to say don’t say anything’ if practiced would make for a much better or at least quieter world. So where am I going with all this, well where I think i’m going is that words have become redundant they have lost all credibility with us on any deep level. They do not in anyway represent the true way we think or feel. As I look around, I see that words are just tools for manipulation and marketing. Knowing this we still seek them out daily to reassure us in this pointless pantomime of lies.

I am often asked to talk or write about my work and I do confess to enjoy this aspect of being an artist but I have become increasingly aware that my words even the best of them limit the scope of my work. For as many people my words impress or inspire an equal amount will be alienated by what I say. I have said all my life in many different ways visual art connects to the heart …or it doesn’t. In truth if words need to be spoken about art then that connection has not been made and the art is no longer to do with the heart but has become like so much in our life an intellectual pursuit in which despite the best intentions lies abound.

Would you look at my Art work with no description no story to back them up? Maybe, but I feel the need to know, the need to ask from the public every time I show my work . I believe that my art has taken me on a spiritual journey, that it points to a wisdom beyond words, a state of being that ‘just is’ within us all. I write it, I speak it, it feels true to me but it could be said that it’s just a good angle, a good hustle and what would I have to defend myself from such accusations? Just words lots more words.

Some day I believe words will run out. They will have become so discredited that any word uttered will simply receive a chorus of mocking laughter. We will return to a time before words, where we will know everything we need to know about people from their body language. We will learn once again to see the truth in their eyes and marvel or recoil at their action without a constant narrative.

In search of the truth

It is a fact that one lifetime is very short and it is almost impossible to read, or more importantly understand all the great writings of history. It is especially hard when you take into account that many of their true meanings are covered by layers of misinterpretation and even at times manipulation. Sadly even some of the purest words from the past have been corrupted, much like stars in the sky, these words only show us a fraction of their pure light. Given that this is the case how can we ever know the real truth?

I believe rather than digging in some distant place for a glimmer of this knowledge, great truth. We should all start an excavation in the most remote place of all, a place so covered in myth and lies that many doubt it even exists. This divine temple of knowledge could be situated nearer than you think. This knowing, this truth, it has been said time and time again is within us all, but it is a fact many still choose to reject this. Rejection of knowledge which is aimed to help the human condition is nothing new and in many ways that is all part of the great cosmic game? That said even if you do intellectually agree with what I say, it may not be enough to unearth this great truth. I have come to believe it is within us at a level of feeling (not thinking) which is often overlooked. I say this not to dishearten you or to intimate you are not ready or that you must say, do, or think something more.

As it has been said by others many times before, you possess everything you will ever need to make contact with this divine spark, this truth within. We have all seem glimpses of the truth, but once your able to silence all doubts the truth will unfold on every level of your being. Then not only will you know the truth but a peace will fall over you . The monkey minds chatter will reduce and you may even experience large moments of serenity. Personally I do not believe that in this life time the ego can ever be truly put to bed, but at the very least you will begin to know the difference between your ego mind and the universal love (truth).

I’m sure many see this lifetime (lifetimes) voyage as a spiritual race. Many may see themselves as being far behind spiritual teachers, priests, monks and alike in this race? Fear not for this is just yet another trick of the ego, in truth a state of knowing is not raced towards, nor is it gained by thousands of hours of meditation, book reading or chanting. A state of knowing, ‘arrives precisely when it means to’ and often in/at the most un-spiritual of times.

A person who is totally lost can often walk ten paces turn a corner and know exactly where they are. I know then that ‘the truth’ for many is just around the next metaphoric corner.
